You have been invited to a wedding and do not know what to wear. The only wedding you have ever been to was your cousins and she got married at the courthouse wearing jeans because she found out she was pregnant. She only invited you to be a witness because she could not tell anyone else in the family she was knocked up. You suddenly realize you have no idea what people even wear to weddings.
Todays weddings actually allow for a lot of freedom in guests attire. Some couples choose to get married in casual ceremonies on the beach where guests can wea women's coats online r shorts and flip flops. Other couples prefer black tie affairs, where men have to wear tuxedos and women wear formal evening gowns.
When a wedding is extremely formal, the invitation will usually note something to that effect to give guests adequate time to find appropriate attire. If a wedding is going to be overly casual, the invitation will mention that as well. So if you get an invitation with no mention of a dress code, then assume it is one of those in-between-weddings that call for semi-formal dress.
Prepping for the Big Buy
If you are going to attend a semi-formal wedding, you should wear a smart, well tailored suit but not a tuxedo. If you dont already own a dark suit, you will need to purchase one before the wedding. Tradition dictates that guests wear navy or black suits to a wedding, so keep that in mind when you go shopping. If you dont have much experience with buying suits, you will need to go get some measurements done beforehand. Get a tailor to take your suit measurements and write them down on a piece of paper. Carry those measurements with you when you go shopping to make the process easier.
When you go shopping, you will have to decide what kind of suit you prefer. Generally, men should wear two-button or three-button suits to a wedding for a traditional, conservative look. You should also look for a suit with a center vent in the back. The vent is a small slit on the bottom of the jackets backside that allows air to travel freely. Center vents are multifunctional and can be used for weddings, funerals or even job interviews. Go for jackets with notch lapels, rather than peak lapels if you want a versatile suit to wear again for other occasions.
Try Before you Buy
While you are shopping for suits, be sure the actually try them on with a dress shirt and shoes to get the total effect. Most stores will let you borrow some dress shoes if you have not taken yours along.
When you try on a suit, pay close attention to how the coat fits through the shoulders and chest. When you button the top or middle buttons of the suit, you shouldnt feel any tugging or tightness. It should be comfortable, without feeling tight or loose. Make sure the shoulder pads sit right along your natural shoulder line to keep from looking like a boxy football player.
The sleeves should reach to your wrists, exposing about a quarter of an inch of your shirt cuffs.
Buy a Tie - It is Integral to your Overall look
The most exciting part of buying a suit is choosing the tie to go along with it. Find a neutral colored dress shirt and then pick a nice, sophisticated tie to complete the look. Choose a conservative tie when you are going to a wedding. Avoid novelty ties with pictures of cartoon characters or sports mascots. Look for beautiful silk ties in solid prints or patterns that coordinate with your suit.
Even if you are not a suit and tie kinda guy, you have got to admit they transform you from an everyday Joe to a Cool Dude!
