Summer Offers from Edmonton Tourism Paired with Shops Galore Make Edmonton a Chic Summer Getaway

A summertime Edmonton vacation for those who like to shop, visit art galleries, enjoy el fresco dining and stay at unique accommodations is easy to plan with a visit to the 124th Street and Area district. Edmonton Tourism makes it even more enticing with special summertime incentives.

Known for its entrepreneurial spirit, the 124th Street and Area is quickly becoming THE Edmonton shopping district with its interesting history and culture. Edmonton businessman Don Freeland, known as a leading entrepreneur being the man who brought pre-washed jeans to Canada and the world when he worked as Vice-President of GWG, now is the proprietor of one of the most impressive Bed and Breakfasts in Alberta located in the 124th Street and Area called Glenora Bed and Breakfast.

Now 83 years old, Freeland is busy introducing the world to another great thing, Edmonton's 124 Street and area. Freeland and his family didn't scrimp on any details when turning Glenora Bed & Breakfast with its 26 guestrooms featuring Victoria decor into one of 124th Street and Area's most stunning choices in Edmonton accommodations.

This historic 1912 Buena Vista Building was originally built as an affluent west-end Edmonton apartment building. In its heyday, its apartments hosted many now legendary characters, such as "Wop" May, the Edmonton pilot who caught the world's attention first as the World War I pilot that the Red Baron was pursuing when he was shot down and later as a bush pilot who flew numerous spectacular mercy missions. There is still a "Wop May room" in the Glenora Bed & Breakfast and a person doesn't have to be an aviation fan to see how impressive it is.

For Helen Nolan, Executive Director of the 124 Street & Area Business Association (BRZ), the Glenora Bed & Breakfast speaks to the timeless appeal of the entire area. "We have the ambience of a small town. We have safe, clean streets and unique shops that have old-fashioned charm and that original feeling of great service," says Nolan. "124th Street is where people come to walk, have coffee, have lunch on an outdoor patio, and browse in one-of-a-kind shops where you can get something different."

A summertime Edmonton vacation spent around 124th Street and Area features some of the best walking and shopping in the city. Peruse thoroughly interesting shops such as Henry's Purveyor of Fine Things, with the perfect fine furnishings for metropolitan living; Fine Line Jewelers and Engravers, who have been in the area for a quarter of a century now; Scottish Imports Inc., where you'll find everything from tartans to reeds for bag piping and a series of unique women's clothing stores, such as TK Clothing, Kaj Clothing, Thread Hill and the aptly-named She Matters.

124th Street and Area also offers a number of great Edmonton restaurant experiences from a night fashion coats of jazz and fine cuisine at the Blue Pear Restaurant to the authentic Thai cuisine of Numchok Wilia to the tasty Greek cuisine of Cosmos and Koutouki or sweet treats at Duchess Bake Shop or the Cellar Door Cake & Catering Company.

124th Street and Area also boasts the oldest Gallery Walk in Canada, with seven art galleries, each specializing in a slightly different take on art. TU Gallery, for example, is the only one of its kind in Canada, featuring mainly artists that put their focus solely on creating functional art made of wood. Think of it as beautiful sculptures that work as fine furniture. This summer, TU Gallery is also bringing a particular European flair to 124th Street. "Every Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., we will have an artist outside the shop, creating art," says Alex Paterson of TU Gallery.

Seasons Change but Some Things Don't: Millions Are Still Dealing with Problematic Perspiration

With cooler temperatures fast approaching, the uncomfortable feeling and worry about perspiration is a thing of the past for many men and women; however, this isn't the case for the millions who suffer from excessive perspiration, also known as hyperhidrosis.

Even in cooler temperatures, sweating can be an issue. In fact, according to two national surveys conducted for Certain Dri], the number one antiperspirant recommended by dermatologists for treating excessive perspiration for more than thirty years:

?Forty-five percent of U.S. adults* - which tr Tips: Find Street Fashion Online(may be you can find what you want on the oasap.com) anslates to almost 110 million people - report that perspiration is either "sometimes" or "often" a problem for them and 25 percent of these respondents indicated their perspiration "is the same regardless of season"

?Thirty percent of U.S. adults** - which translates to more than 70 million people nationwide - admit to suffering from problematic foot sweat and three-quarters of this group also battle foot odor. What's more 13 percent of these respondents also indicated that their feet always feel excessively sweaty, regardless of the season

During the cooler months, excessive perspiration is not only brought on by warm indoor temperatures and heavier clothing but also by stress and even every day tasks. "Contrary to belief, people do not sweat less in cooler weather months," says David Bank, M.D., dermatologist and director of The Center for Dermatology, Cosmetic and Laser Surgery. "Our bodies still lose up to a quart of fluid a day, but it's more noticeable. Someone with excessive perspiration, or hyperhidrosis, as it's called, will perspire even more, no matter what season it is."

Not to worry, below Dr. Bank offers a few tips on how to feel and stay dry during the cooler months while wearing the latest fashions:

?Curb the waterworks…while you sleep: Look for Certain Dri? Anti-Perspirant Roll-On with 12 percent aluminum chloride, which is the same active ingredient in prescription-strength antiperspirants, but in a gentler, non-alcohol formula. Certain Dri Anti-Perspirant is clinically tested and dermatologist-recommended as the most effective solution for excessive underarm perspiration, as well as for occasional, excessive perspiration due to stress, heat, sports, occupation, etc. Now available in a SOLID application.

?Layer Up: If you are still concerned that you might develop noticeable sweaty pits or if you experience back sweat from time to time, consider wearing a form fitting undershirt or tank top made of a fabric that wicks away perspiration from the body. This will leave you feeling dry and worry free all day.

?Chill Out: Consider relaxation techniques, such as yoga. This can help to control the stress that can also trigger perspiration. "Many times people who suffer from excessive perspiration also worry about it so much that they create a spiral effect. Suffering from excessive perspiration can be a debilitating condition on an emotional, social and functional level," says Dr. Bank.

?Stomp Out Sweat and Odor: To help keep your feet dry during the day, apply new Certain Dri Feet Moisture Control Pads to your feet at night. Formulated with 12 percent aluminum chloride and approved by the American Podiatric Medical Association, your feet will feel dry an fresh all day. For added protection and to combat foot odor sprinkle new Certain Dri Feet Microsponge Powder on your feet each morning. The powder contains the patented Microsponge Delivery System that is triggered into action with heat, friction or moisture to release five odor fighting ingredients that provide several levels of odor defense.

?Eat and Drink Right: Keep in mind certain foods and beverages can exacerbate an excessive perspiration problem and also cause increased body odor, such as drinks that contain caffeine or foods that contain high amounts of garlic or onions.

For more information about excessive perspiration, consumers can visit http://www.certaindri.com.

Survey Methodology:
*Harris Interactive? fielded the study from February 28- March 2, 2006, via its QuickQuerySM online omnibus service, interviewing a nationwide sample of 2,099 U.S. adults, among whom 1,048 indicated that perspiration is sometimes or often a problem for them.

**Harris Interactive fielded the survey on behalf of Certain Dri Feet Products from February 6-8, 2008, via its QuickQuery online omnibus service, interviewing a nationwide sample of 2,015 U.S. adults aged 18 years and older.

Note to Media: If you are interested in setting up an informative interview with Dr. David Bank or would like to receive Certain Dri product samples for review, please contact Laura Giardina at (914) 241-0086, ext. 20.

Running of the Brides Sale Turns Filene’s Basement Into an Old-fashioned Bazaar

Hundreds of brides-to-be are expected at the legendary Running of the Brides? sale in South Florida on May 6, all looking to snag the wedding gown of their dreams at a bargain price. At 8:00am the brides and their helpers will burst through the doors of Filene's Basement in Aventura to wade through over 1300 gowns, sizes 2 to 26. So deep are the discounts, many customers will literally pounce on dresses priced from $249-$699 that might otherwise cost as much as $9,000. This year, Filene's Basement is partnering with Slim-Fast? to help brides get the perfect fit in the perfect dress for the big day.

"We know looking for the perfect dress at a great price is a primary concern for many brides," said Joel Feigenbaum, president and COO of Filene's Basement and its parent company SYMS Clothing. "But we also know brides want to look their best on their big day and Slim-Fast? can help. Filene's Basement and Slim-Fast? are a good match – we both want to help brides look picture perfect on their wedding day."

The racks are stripped bare in less than 90 seconds as the brides and their teammates grab the first dresses they reach. Then it's time for the women to strip down to leotards, sports bras or even underwear to try on gowns right there on the sales floor.

If it doesn't quite fit or if it needs a little pressing, the experts from DryEco in Sunny Isles will be there to work their magic, and the bride can still come out way ahead. But what happens if a petite bride snagged a size 14 dress in pink chiffon when she really wanted a size 4 in white satin? That's when the real fun begins, as the women start bartering to find the right designer or size. It's a ritual that turns Filene's Basement into an old-fashioned bazaar.

For brides who don't like crowds there are plenty of great deals to be found later in the day when things calm down. Whether you get there at 8:00am for the 'rus fashion jackets h to the racks' or plan to arrive later, bring a camera—veterans of this sale agree, it's an experience worth preserving.

The Running of the Brides? sale takes place Friday, May 6, 2011 at Filene's Basement, 17651 Biscayne Boulevard, Aventura, FL 33160. Hours are 8:00am to 9:00pm. Checks, credit cards and cash are accepted. All sales are final. For more information call 305-936-2497 or visit http://www.filenesbasement.com/running-of-the-brides.

Salesians Assist Victims, Prepare for Long-Term Recovery after Cyclone Strikes Southeast India

In response to the devastation caused by the recent cyclone that struck southeast India, Salesians in the region plan to create a Disaster Management Endowment Fund as well as launch a farmers' association to aid in agricultural recovery efforts.

The Salesians' work will go far beyond the immediate relief that was needed in the days following Cyclone Thane. The disaster will have long-term effects on the economy of the region, as entire communities must rebuild. In addition to restoring their social development and education programs in operation prior to the cyclone, the Salesians must now rebuild their own missions and lead community recovery efforts.

"Beyond these immediate needs, we must offer mid- and long-term assistance," says Father Johnson Antonysamy, director of the Salesian mission in Chennai. "We are facing a years-long process of reconstruction."

Infrastructure support is just one area of need. To restore the standard of living, the Salesians plan to women's coats online create a Disaster Management Endowment Fund to help underwrite the costs of rebuilding roads, restoring electricity and other long-term needs. For those displaced, houses that once had thatch roofs must be rebuilt with stronger materials to better withstand extremes in weather.

In addition, farms essential to the livelihood of their owners have been devastated. In some villages, almost 80 percent of some long standing crops – such as rice, corn, sugarcane, and bananas – have been destroyed. According to Fr. Antonysamy, some estimate it may take seven years for farmers to recover and rebuild these crops. In some villages, entire cashew groves were destroyed with not even a single cashew tree left standing. Estimates indicate it will take years to re-grow these groves, Antonysamy adds. The Salesians are launching a farmers' association to aid in agricultural recovery efforts, including options for financial assistance.

Given their long-standing educational work in these communities, the Salesians hope to help residents not only envision a sustainable future, but to participate in building it.

"We are resilient here in southeast India," says Fr. Antonysamy. "Together with the people we serve, we will build a better future."

On the evening of Dec. 31, 2011, Cyclone Thane barreled through the districts of Cuddalore, Villupuram and Puducherry. In its wake, residents dealt with leveled homes and uprooted trees; flooded farmlands that destroyed precious crops; and the death of dozens of men, women and children.

People were without food, water, electricity and shelter. Those with thatched roofs had their roofs blown off and more than 20,000 people were displaced. Destruction to Salesian property in Puducherry, Cuddalore and the missions in Gedilam and Maranodi Vinnarasi resulted in shattered windows, sheared off roofs, destroyed water heaters, and ruined equipment in several vocational centers. But despite their own losses, the Salesians stepped in during the immediate aftermath and provided shelter in their missions, meals, clean water, clothing and comfort to those affected by the devastation.

Salesian Missions – the U.S. development arm of the international Salesians of Don Bosco – has set up a fund to assist in the relief and rebuilding efforts. To give, go to SalesianMissions.org, click on "Donate Now" and select "India Cyclone Relief Fund."

Store Supply Warehouse Prepares Retailers for Graduation and Mother’s Day Shoppers

With graduation and Mother's Day approaching in May, retailers must prepare for last minute shoppers picking up gifts for graduates and mothers alike. Setting up retail displays, and offering appropriate retail packaging are just a few ways retailers can prepare for the upcoming gift-giving time of year.

For graduation, Store Supply Warehouse encourages retailers to focus on retail merchandise displays. With various sized mannequins and display racks, retailers can create clothing displays that showcase the latest men's and women's fashions. For kids preparing for the next step in their life, new clothes are a necessity. Whether going off to college at the end of summer, or entering high school for the first time, retailers can show off the most fashionable looks so that kids are up to date on the latest trends.

"We have male mannequins, female mannequins, and children-sized mannequins, so that all sizes and styles of clothing can be highlighted, especially at a time when parents purchase new clothes for their recent graduates," said Matt Wohlstadter, President of Store Supply Warehouse.

While graduation dates are scattered throughout May, one particular date remains most important: May 13, Mother's Day. While a variety of gifts might be purchased for mothers, jewelry tends to be the big women's coats seller of the season. With more jewelry being purchased than usual, retailers should ensure that they are fully stocked with jewelry gift boxes, jewelry displays, and jewelry price tags.

Additionally, customers can look forward to a new line of retail bags just in time for Mother's Day. The Fashion Prints and Fashion Color collections offer bright colors and specialty animal prints that mom will love. With a wide variety of tissue paper, ribbon, and raffia, retailers can coordinate colors with the bags, so that customers can walk out of the shop with their gift completely wrapped.

"Because gifts for mom are usually purchased by children and husbands, retailers can really increase sales simply by offering giftwrap solutions. Wrapping is time consuming and can prove to be a difficult task for some people, and retailers can provide a convenient service that will satisfy the shopper and make mom happy," added Wohlstadter.

As both graduation and Mother's Day near, Store Supply Warehouse reminds store owners that it's never too late to stock up on the latest display fixtures and packaging supplies. Store Supply Warehouse guarantees all items to be in stock, and all orders placed before 3 p.m. to be shipped on the same day, arriving to the retailer just in time for graduation and Mother's Day.

All attendees had the opportunity to meet and greet newcomers and members, welcome new Board members, and hear from three guest speakers.

Waco Local Chapter President Sandra Kennedy introduced the Chapter's newly formed Board that includes herself; Carol Ringwald, Vice President; and Vicky Smith, Secretary/Historian.

Sandra informed the group that two positions were still open, that of Event Planner, who would be responsible for planning each meeting, including ordering lunches, and planning and coordinating other events that the group decides to hold, and Treasurer. Member Diane Castello, who was one of the evenings's featured speakers, volunteered on the spot for the position of Treasurer.

As Treasurer, Diane will oversee the Waco Chapter funds. All attendees agreed Diane would be an excellent addition to the Chapter Board and elected her to the position of Chapter Treasurer.

"The group was in favor and we made it official!" said Sandra. "Diane was one of our guest speakers, donated two gift certificates, and became our Treasurer after experiencing our group for the very first time!"

After Sandra invited several new attendees to each share a 30-second self-introduction each, she introduced the three guest speakers and invited them to share with the group information about themselves and their work. The speakers were Pam Mohundro, Executive Director of Christian Women's Job Corp of Waco (CWJC); Diane Costello, Waco Owner of Painting with a Twist; and Destiny DeLillo, Executive Director (Central Texas) of Susan G. Komen Foundation.

"Everyone was engaged and delighted to learn more from these impressive women and their organizations," said Sandra.

Pam shared how CWJC provides educational opportunities for women in crisis situations who need to earn a GED and learn life, interviewing, and workplace skills. The organization also partners with Second Chance as they give women vouchers for clothing. Pam requested that anyone with donations to please give to Second Chance and let them know they are donating on behalf of CWJC. One of CWJC's major fundraisers is the Baskets of Hope that will be held in
October. She urged everyone to attend and told the women that if anyone wants to donate a basket, to please contact her.

"CWJC is an important charity doing outstanding work to help woman in our community grow and advance professionally," said Sandra.

Diane explained to members and guests how she has a day job with American Bank and now has opened her Painting with a Twist shop, where she works evenings and weekends. She shared how she had a bout with cancer and beat it, then decided to do what she loves. Diane enjoys painting with people to see them smile when they realize they can create a work of art on their own. She noted that anyone can register online for classes or to donate to specific causes, as she often hosts classes for charitable organizations.

"Everyone seemed to be greatly moved by Diane's personal strength to beat cancer, and her commitment to do what she loves and with people she cares about," noted Sandra.

Destiny talked about how the Susan G. Komen Foundation provides funds for free mammograms for women through their major fundraiser, Race for the Cure. She told members and guests that the organization is very busy during the rest of the year as well, providing health care in smaller communities throughout McLennan County.

"Destiny's professionalism and passion for what she does truly impressed everyone in the room," said Sandra.

The Chapter President next led a discussion about meeting days and times for future events. The group agreed the second Wednesday of each month works well for everyone and the current time of noon to 1:30pm is a good time to meet.

Sandra urged anyone who wants to suggest future speakers, topics, and other group partnerships to please let the group know and encouraged everyone to give some thought to these items. Also at the meeting, five door prizes were awarded: Kristi Morgan and Karen Tanner each received a Painting with a Twist gift certificate women's jackets ; Patsy Brooks won an Inspire Motivation Picture and Wind Chimes; an inspirational book, If Only I Knew and scented candles went to Vicky Smith; and Diane Castello was the lucky winner of a wine carrier gift bag of goodies that was donated by Spherion.

Diane Castello, the Chapter's new Treasurer, graciously offered to host the next networking meeting at her shop, Painting with a Twist, located at 1617 N. Valley Mills Drive. The meeting will be held on Wednesday, September 19th from noon to 1:30pm. Pizza will be ordered and a price per head will not exceed $5 each. Sandra will provide beverages and desserts at no cost to attendees. More details to follow in next month's online invitations.

"We'd like to extend our thanks to Diane for volunteering her place for the next upcoming meeting. I encourage everyone to invite at least one person to the next meeting and don't forget to bring recommendations for future events, speakers, and charities we want to learn more about," said Sandra.

The popular online store Hyena Cart – with more than 1,000 active sellers, most of them "mompreneurs" who run their own online stores – has just launched an update of its Spots' Corner online store, whi women's jackets ch is designed for moms and moms-to-be who want to buy or sell quality new or used, handmade or commercially-made merchandise, such as children's clothing, cloth diapers, yarn, toys, and nursing/maternity clothing.

The revamped site attracts about 15,000 unique visitors a day. In addition, the site totals about 45,000 page loads and sales of more than 125 items a day.

Spots' Corner (http://hyenacart.com/stores/Spots_corner/) is a popular shopping location, especially for mothers of young children and expectant mothers who are looking for eco-friendly items and a large, reasonably-priced selection of quality new and used merchandise, Hyena Cart owner Karen Lee said.

"The new site design features a fresher, more modern look that's more in keeping with the overall Hyena Cart site redesign," Lee said. "We kept it fun to stay consistent with the Spots character, and added green leaves and other references to the eco-friendly nature of many of the products sold on Spots' Corner."

Shopping on Spots' Corner works like other Hyena Cart (HC) stores, allowing shoppers to make purchases by simply registering for a free HC shopping account or signing in to their existing HC shopping account.

Listing items for sale is easy, too, Lee said. Sellers may list as many items as they wish for a two-week $2.50 fee. No additional fees – such as listing or final value fees – are charged.

Most items sold on Spots' Corner are handmade, but mass-produced items are acceptable, such as quality children's clothing and commercially-made baby carriers and toys – so long as the seller does not check the "handmade" box when listing such items.

Examples of popular items on the site include Goodmama diapers, Bamboletta dolls and Dashing Dachs yarn.

"Spots' Corner is an excellent place for finding new owners for outgrown children's clothes and cloth diapers that are in excellent condition, unused or barely used toys and yarns you had good intentions of making into something beautiful," said Lee.

Regular customer Bethany Kehl Esposito of Rumney, NH, said that Spots' Corner offers "great items that women like me look for--everything from quality diapers to clothing."

"Spots' is the first place I look for that must-have item, and I love how I can search for specific things, too," she said. "It is user-friendly and easy to navigate."

A recent survey yielded many positive responses from satisfied buyers and sellers such as these:

  •          "I love Spots' Corner. It's nice to be able to find good deals on used children's items."
  •          "Spots (is) very convenient and inexpensive to list while reaching a target audience."
  •          "I love Spots' Corner because it's a great place to sell used items for a low fee."
  •          "Spots' Corner is great because anyone can use it. It isn't some exclusive club that is hard to navigate or understand."

OASAP Will Work with Dress Designers to Launch the Original Products in 2013

With the development of B2C online store, more and more people find a problem, that is,there is still a wall to prevent the direct communication between consumers and designers. It is an especially prominent issue for this kind of online companies whose major business is fashion apparel like Oasap Ltd.

From current B2C model of online apparel stores, designers are always hidden behind the scenes, they are difficult to get the feedback about the latest fashion clothing styles from consumers directly, and to make matters worse, they have not unimpeded channels to listen to the sound of the end customers.

"We have a plan to set up a bridge between consumers and designers through our online channel, so that we can bring a direct dialogue between the two sides, " OASAP CEO, Mr.Moore decided to change this situation," We'd like to provide a development platform for those unknown original designers by 'Samples + Pre-sale', and begin the brand operation by the supply chain model of 'Consumers - Designers - Works', so as to promote the works of contract designers to individual brands and to meet the needs of unique styles from consumers. "

"We're just getting started now, and have not many suppliers and third-party cooperators currently, but we will open this D2C (designer to consumers) channel to more studios and individual designers from the end of this year. In future, we will sign contracts with more designers in different styles, so to rich the entire OASAP D2C channel", when talked about the prospects of D2C model, Nico Robin, OASAP Brand Director, introduced with confidence.

This Oasap model will open a direct dialogue era between dress designers and consumers. Every designer and every product will accept the inspection from customers, the good works will receive the honors and benefits but the out-of date products will be eliminated from the supply list. In this process, OASAP will take another substantial step on the road to a well-known brand by the fusion of fashion and customization.

Wacky World News Stories from 2006

Here are a collection of some of the bizarre and strange stories over recent times.

Good Samaritan arrested for drunk driving

A German man was arrested for drunk driving after he mistook a police spot check for a breakdown and stopped to help. Officers inspecting a car by the roadside suspected the 37-year-old passing motorist was under the influence of alcohol when he lurched from his vehicle to offer assistance, reports Reuters.
"Obviously his optical assessment of the situation as he drove past was that this was a vehicle breakdown," the police said in a statement. The man was arrested and banned from driving.

Shanghai goes the extra smile

Eager to put on its best face for foreign guests ahead of the 2010 World Expo, Shanghai is sending teams of "smiling volunteers" onto the streets to teach stony-faced citizens to beam at strangers. Forty university students have signed up to smile at people in public places, after a survey showed that only 2 percent of Chinese people smile at strangers, reports Reuters.

Team-leader Xu Xiaohong said: "We ask all the members to practise smiling at home. "We smile at the mirror to determine whether our smiles are acceptable. We not only smile with our mouths but also with our eyes."

Attempts to generate warmth among strangers in China have had mixed success. In October, volunteers offering "free hugs" to people in a busy shopping street in Beijing were detained by police for questioning.

Giant mirror takes village out of darkness

A village in the shadow of the Italian Alps has installed a giant mirror on a mountainside to reflect sunshine into its main square. Viganella, in the narrow Antrona valley, north of Turin, saw no sun for three months of the year before the project, reports CBC News.

The 48 sq metre steel sheet is controlled by computers to follow the path of the sun and reflect its rays down into the village square for at least six hours a day. Viganella, with a population of only 197, formerly suffered from a complete lack of direct sun from November 11 to February 2. Mayor Pierfranco Midali presented the project for approval in January of this year to help lift his community out of darkness, and the 70,000 pound cost was met by local government and a private bank.

999 'for emergencies only' say police

Devon and Cornwall Police have recently revealed some of the time-wasting 999 calls they have received. A woman dialled 999 when she realised her trousers didn't fit. Another woman rang the emergency services to report a pigeon in her garden, while another caller asked for a pizza to be delivered. Other calls included complaints of a phone battery running out, builders making too much noise and a report of a large owl sitting on a telegraph pole.

According to the Sun, Chief Inspector Nick Jarrold said: "There is a funny side, but I don't know what goes through their heads when they dial 999 to ask about changing their trousers. "An emergency call is when it is a life-or-death situation, people are injured or th women's jackets e baddies are still at the scene."
NE manhunt sparked by 'scary noise'

Two men who sparked a manhunt when their tent was found empty have admitted abandoning their camp after hearing a "scary" noise. About 50 volunteers joined the search when the empty tent was found in remote Harwood Forest, near Rothbury, Northumberland, on 5 December. Sniffer dogs and a helicopter with a thermal imaging camera were also used, according to the BBC.

Police had been concerned after finding a jacket and enough food for four days inside the tent. When they were traced on Saturday, the men confessed to driving away in a panic after hearing the noise. The abandoned campsite equipment has now been returned to the men, who do not wish to be named.

Santa vs shoplifters

A German Santa turned crimefighter when he leapt into action to chase two shoplifters. Santa Claus Dieter Thurn, 52, was in his grotto in a department store in Bremen when he saw the crooks filling their rucksacks with expensive cosmetics, reports Ananova.com.
Thurn flew after the pair and managed to hold them down until the police arrived.

Daniel Ingeborg, six, who was visiting the store with his mother, told local press: "Santa's so cool. He gives presents and fights crime. He's like Superman but better."

Raffled lobster wins freedom

A giant lobster has been saved from the cooking pot after persistent lobbying from restaurant diners. The Miami Herald reports that 50 year old monstroa is 37 inches long, and has 15-inch-long claws. He had been living in the lobster tank at a Massachusetts restaurant, and while half the customers wanted to eat him; the other half felt sorry for him.

Restaurant owner Fred Cunha decided to raffle at $1 a ticket to reach Monstroas retail price of $150, and let the winner decide his fate. Winner Claire Lupton returned Monstro to the ocean, saying that a lobster that big and old shouldn't end up on a dinner plate.

Armed robber foiled in Lego heist

Police in Florida are looking for a little girl who pulled a knife on a shop assistant as she tried to steal two boxes of Lego on Tuesday night. The girl, aged about seven or eight, hid the toys under her coat and tried to walk out the door.

A store employee was watching and approached the child, asking her to turn over the Lego blocks. Police say the little girl then opened her jacket and displayed a ten-inch carving knife.

The employee talked the girl into putting down the knife and the toys. The girl then rode away on her bicycle.

Thief leaves police vital tip-off

Criminal stupidity appears to be on the rise.Germany provides another example of illegal imbecility.

A careless burglar provided police with a crucial clue at a break-in when he sliced off the end of a finger on a broken window, Reuters reports. Police wasted no time in matching the piece of finger with existing prints of a 15-year-old from the town of Hildesheim. The youth initially denied breaking and entering, but confessed when police produced the digital remnant.

"We usually find fingerprints at the crime scene, but it's not every day that thieves leave the original there too," said a police spokesman. "I don't know if the fellow asked for it back afterwards."

South African court fines 'pregnant' man

A South African man has been fined $140 for taking a week off work, telling his employers he was pregnant. Charles Sibindana, 27, stole a certificate from a clinic during his pregnant girlfriend's checkup, the BBC reports. He then added his own details to the note, submitted it to his employers and took seven days off work, seemingly unaware that only women consult gynaecologists.

His employers became suspicious and investigated the matter. On passing sentence Magistrate Bruno Van Eeden warned Mr Sibindana "not to walk around faking sick letters from gynaecologists."

Dangers Of Reverse Mortgages – Top 3 Things To Be Aware Of

As the baby-boomers prepare for retirement reverse mortgages are going to be the next mortgage boom according to most analyst. The baby boom began in 1946 and continued through 1964. During those 19 years, 76 million people were born. As this segment of America begins to retire a large portion of them will need to rely on their homes equity to make "ends meet." How they access that equity will be the mortgage industries primary focus in the years to come.

The traditional "forward" mortgage has the homeowner borrow the money by way of a traditional mortgage or home equity line and make payments on that amount. The homeowner takes the money, places it in a safe interest bearing account and uses the money to augment their income. The interest that is earned on the money is used to supplements the monthly payment that the homeowner has to make. The problem is that the interest shrinks as the money is used and the mortgage payments stay the same.

Reverse mortgages have actually been around since 1989, but their popularity is skyrocketing as a result of the wave of baby-boomers that are retiring. These mortgage products are safe and beneficial when applied to the right homeowner and circumstances. Lendfast.com recommends that borrowers use FHA-insured Home Equity Conversion Mortgage (HECM) when considering these mortgage products. Getting a reverse mortgage from the private sector may include more headaches and costs. However, as with financial product, there are some dangers t women's coats hat you need to be aware of; here are the top three reverse mortgage pitfalls to lookout for.

1) Repayment and Forfeiture – Most, if not all reverse mortgages will not require you to make payments or repay the loan for as long as you live. Once you pass on your heirs will have the opportunity to remortgage the debt or sell the house and repay the loan. If the home has equity above the amount owed to the bank your heirs will receive those proceeds. If the home is "upside down" your heirs have no obligation to repay the debt, but they will forfeit the home unless they pay the amount owed.

However FHA rules state: "When you sell your home or no longer use it for your primary residence, you or your estate will repay the cash you received from the reverse mortgage, plus interest and other fees, to the lender." The danger here is "no longer use it for your primary residence. This means if you have to go to a hospice, nursing home or intend to live in another home and use the house as a second home the bank will call the debt due. This is definitely something you want to consider before taking out a reverse mortgage.

2) Cost and Interest Rates – At the inception of reverse mortgages they were almost exclusively offered with adjustable interest rates. Adjustable rates are still standard practice and you are almost certain to be offered this option to begin with. Don't! There are fixed rate programs available now and at today's rates adjustable rates are only going to go up in the future. It's easy to be lured into an adjustable rate because lower interest rates in a reverse mortgage have higher monthly payments. If the interest rate increases your payment decreases, as does the time frame you have to draw on the mortgage. Just remember, adjustable interest rates are a gamble and Las Vegas wasn't built on winners.

A considerable downside to reverse mortgages is the high up front costs. This cost can be compensated by a lower interest rate over time, but some seniors choose other options to draw on their home equity. Reverse mortgage closing costs should be about the same as most loans except the 2% mortgage insurance premium that FHA charges to insure the loan. FHA insures the lender will be paid regardless of the home's value when and if the lender has to take over the property.

At Lendfast.com we have noticed that many homeowners are paying higher closing costs for reverse mortgages than traditional forward mortgages. We believe this is because most homeowners are unfamiliar with reverse mortgages and tend to not shop around as with traditional mortgages. This is why we recommend the FHA insured type of reverse mortgages because they have closing cost limits that lenders must abide by. Always get two quotes or use the "lenders compete" method to apply for a reverse mortgage. You should also read How Does a Reverse Mortgage Work an article that explains reverse mortgages better.

3) Upkeep, Taxes and Insurance – On traditional mortgages your escrow payments are added to your payment but they are subtracted from your monthly check on a reverse mortgage. Most of the time you will be shown the monthly amount you will receive each month BEFORE the escrows are taken out. This means that you could sign up expecting to get $900 per month and only receive around $700. Make sure you are given the monthly payment LESS your escrow payment. Like most mortgages you will usually be given the option to escrow or not to escrow, however the bank has a vested interest in your home. Meaning if you do not maintain your insurance and taxes as they deem responsible they can call the loan or force an escrow account on you.

When you consider that the bank is basically buying your home you can understand why they would want you to keep their property in good shape. The problem is that this loan is being made to senior citizens. As they age they may become unable to do the necessary maintenance that the bank requires."Good shape" can mean thousands of dollars out of pocket for the homeowner when you consider what a new roof or a fresh coat of paint costs these days. Ask the loan officer what the lenders policy is on maintenance and repair. You may want to take enough money up front to have future repairs taken care of so that your monthly payment stays the same.
